About ATM Invention

The first ATM was installed at a Barclays Bank branch in Enfield, London, on June 27, 1967. Invented by John Shepherd Barron, the machine dispensed 10 notes. The first customer was actor Reg Varney from On the Buses. The original machines used radioactive checks and personal identification numbers. James Goodfellow independently developed an ATM with a PIN system in Scotland. The ATM revolutionized banking, allowing 24 hour cash access. By 2024, there were over 3 million ATMs worldwide. The number of ATMs is declining as digital payments replace cash. The ATM was one of the first technologies that normalized automated human machine financial interaction.
