About Sveriges Riksbank

The worlds oldest central bank, founded in 1668 as Riksens Stnders Bank. Originally established to issue reliable banknotes and manage government debt. The Riksbank pioneered many central banking concepts. In 1897 it gained monopoly on banknote issuance. The Riksbank introduced the worlds first unconditional interest rate target in 1993 and was an early adopter of negative interest rates in 2015. The Nobel Prize in Economics is officially awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences but administered in association with the Riksbank, commemorating its 300th anniversary in 1968.
