Templar Financial Network
About Templar Financial Network
The Knights Templar operated the most extensive financial network in medieval Europe. With commanderies across Europe and the Holy Land, the Templars offered international money transfers. A pilgrim could deposit gold in Paris and withdraw it in Jerusalem using a coded letter. The Templars also offered loans to kings and nobles. King Philip IV of France, deeply in debt to the Templars, orchestrated their destruction on Friday October 13, 1307. The Templars financial sophistication was centuries ahead of its time. Their banking practices influenced the development of Italian banking houses and the bill of exchange.
