About Banco do Brasil
Founded in 1808 by Prince Regent Joao VI of Portugal, who had fled to Brazil during the Napoleonic Wars. Banco do Brasil is the second oldest operating bank in Brazil and one of the oldest in the Americas. The bank has served as commercial bank, central bank, and currency issuer at various times. It was reorganized multiple times. The modern Banco do Brasil is the largest bank in Latin America by assets. The Brazilian government owns 50 percent. Banco do Brasil has over 100 million customers and operates internationally. The bank finances Brazilian agriculture, industry, and trade. It survived the hyperinflation era of the 1980s and 1990s and multiple currency reforms.
