About Barclays

One of the oldest British banks, tracing roots to 1690 when John Freame began trading as a goldsmith banker in London. Barclays was a founding member of the London Stock Exchange. The bank pioneered the worlds first ATM in 1967 at its Enfield branch, inaugurated by Reg Varney. Barclays introduced the credit card to the UK in 1966 as the Barclaycard. The bank acquired Lehman Brothers North American operations in September 2008 for 1.75 billion, days after Lehmans bankruptcy. Barclays was fined 290 million in 2012 for LIBOR manipulation, the first major bank punished in the scandal. CEO Bob Diamond resigned as a result.
