BNP Paribas
About BNP Paribas
The largest bank in France and one of the largest in Europe. BNP Paribas was formed from the 2000 merger of Banque Nationale de Paris and Paribas. BNP acquired Bank of the West in the US and Fortis in Belgium during the 2008 crisis. The bank was fined 8.9 billion in 2014 for violating US sanctions against Iran, Cuba, and Sudan, the largest such fine ever. The fine demonstrated the extraterritorial reach of US financial regulations. BNP Paribas operates in 72 countries and is a leading European corporate and investment bank. The French government owns about 17 percent of the bank through various entities.
