Central Bank Digital Currency
About Central Bank Digital Currency
Central bank digital currencies are digital forms of central bank money. The Peoples Bank of China launched the digital yuan pilot in 2020, becoming the first major central bank to test a CBDC. The Bahamas launched the Sand Dollar in 2020. Nigerias eNaira launched in 2021. Over 100 central banks are exploring CBDCs. CBDCs could improve payment efficiency, financial inclusion, and cross border payments. Concerns include privacy, as governments could track all transactions, and the potential for CBDCs to compete with commercial bank deposits. The Bank of England, European Central Bank, and Federal Reserve are researching but have not committed to launching CBDCs. The digital currency debate reflects broader tensions between innovation, privacy, and sovereignty.
