Credit Agricole
About Credit Agricole
Founded in 1894 as a network of local agricultural credit cooperatives. Credit Agricole grew into the largest bank in France by assets and one of the largest in Europe. The bank has a unique federated structure with 39 regional banks owning the central body. Credit Agricole acquired Credit Lyonnais in 2003 after Credit Lyonnais nearly collapsed from scandal. Credit Agricole is known as the Green Bank for its agricultural roots and green logo. The bank has expanded into Italy, Poland, and other European markets. Credit Lyonnais had suffered from the Executive Life insurance scandal involving French corruption and illegal acquisitions in the US.
