About ING Group

ING was formed in 1991 from the merger of Nationale Nederlanden insurance and NMB Postbank. ING pioneered direct banking with the launch of ING Direct in 1997, offering online savings accounts without physical branches. ING Direct became the largest online bank in the world with operations in 9 countries. ING Direct USA was sold to Capital One in 2011 for 9 billion as part of INGs restructuring after the 2008 crisis. ING received 10 billion in Dutch state support in 2008 and repaid it by 2014. ING divested its insurance business as required by the European Commission. ING remains one of Europes largest direct banks.
