Intesa Sanpaolo
About Intesa Sanpaolo
Intesa Sanpaolo was formed from the 2007 merger of Banca Intesa and Sanpaolo IMI. The bank became the largest in Italy by market capitalization and deposits. Intesa had been formed from mergers of multiple Italian banks including Cariplo. Sanpaolo IMI traced roots to the Istituto Bancario San Paolo di Torino, founded in 1563. Intesa Sanpaolo weathered the European debt crisis better than UniCredit, its main Italian rival. The bank has over 13 million customers and 3,500 branches. Intesa acquired UBI Banca in 2020 for 4 billion, creating a stronger domestic leader. Intesa focuses on wealth management, corporate lending, and international banking, particularly in Eastern Europe through its subsidiary VUB Banka.
