About PayPal Origins
PayPal was founded in 1998 as Confinity by Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, and Luke Nosek. The company initially focused on cryptography for handheld devices but pivoted to online payments. Elon Musk founded X.com, an online bank, around the same time. The two companies merged in 2000. PayPal became the payment method of choice for eBay auctions, growing rapidly. PayPal pioneered fraud detection using machine learning. The company went public in 2002 and was acquired by eBay for 1.5 billion. PayPal was spun off from eBay in 2015 at a 50 billion valuation. The PayPal Mafia, former employees who founded Tesla, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other companies, became legendary in Silicon Valley. PayPal pioneered online payments and laid the groundwork for the fintech industry.
