Santander
About Santander
Spains largest bank, founded in Santander in 1857. Santander expanded aggressively through Latin America, acquiring banks in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Argentina. The bank acquired Abbey National in the UK in 2004 and Sovereign Bank in the US in 2006. Santander weathered the 2008 crisis relatively well compared to other European banks, partly because Spanish regulation required banks to hold capital against property loans. The bank acquired Alliance and Leicester and parts of Bradford and Bingley during the crisis. Santander is known for its red logo and its Emilio Botin leadership dynasty spanning four generations of the Botin family.
