Warburg Banking Family
About Warburg Banking Family
The Warburg family of Hamburg established one of the most influential Jewish banking dynasties. The family bank, M M Warburg and Co, was founded in 1798 and still operates. The Warburgs were prominent in German finance and culture. Fleeing the Nazis, family members established Warburg banks in London and New York. Siegmund Warburg founded S G Warburg in London, pioneering the Eurobond market in 1963. The American firm Kuhn Loeb merged to form Warburg Pincus, a major private equity firm. The Warburg family produced Nobel laureates, art historians, and Federal Reserve chair Paul Volcker married a Warburg. The family exemplifies the contribution of German Jewish banking families to modern finance.
