Wire Transfer Origins
About Wire Transfer Origins
Western Union introduced the first electronic money transfer in 1872 using the telegraph network. A person could deposit money at one Western Union office and have it paid out at another. The service revolutionized long distance payments. Before wire transfers, money had to be physically shipped, a risky and slow process. The Federal Reserve Wire Network, established in 1918, connected Federal Reserve Banks by telegraph for interbank transfers. The SWIFT system, launched in 1977, standardized international wire transfers. Modern instant payment systems including FedNow, UPI in India, and Pix in Brazil represent the latest evolution of electronic money transfer, moving funds in seconds rather than days.
